The opening of the new library in Solna

For just over a year, the library in Solna has been closed for renovation, but now the we can proudly present the new library in Solna. You can now also use the library outside regular opening hours. A little bit of work still remains...

Final words

So here we are. The shelves are in place. Books are in place. We long after seeing you all in our nice new premises. But the pandemic is still ongoing.

We really wish we could have arranged a real opening of our new library. But we have to take it step by step.

Today we finally re-introduce extended opening hours in Solna. Now all students and KI staff with a KI-card can access the library every day 7:0022:00. But restrictions still apply  only visit the library if necessary. Some spaces are not available for meeting in groups.

The library renovation project is now also officially over. But of course some adjustments will be done  not least before going back to more normal routines in the future. We hope to see you all then!

Until then  keep distance & take care of yourself and others!

Views from “the heel”Project manager Emma-Lotta.

This is me, project leader Emma-Lotta, sitting on the so called “heel” in our new library.

This elevated part of the floor is made to strengthen it so that it can hold all our books. Bookshelves will be placed upon it.

Unfortunately the shelves are delayed and will not arrive before february. Before this we can not open the whole library as we had planned.

After the holidays we will therefore offer limited opening hours and service. We hope to open more study places before the shelves arrive, but we have to wait for the shelves before we can offer extended opening hours and all our book collections for loan.

We of course also find this quite disappointing. But we cannot do much about it. But we can thank you once again for your patience and wish you all wonderful holidays!

We are open!

On Monday at 10 am we opened up the doors again at Berzelius väg 7 B. Our first visitor was Kadira who dropped by to return a book.

As has been mentioned our service is limited during the first period of time. Primarily we are available one floor up where our new course book room is located.

At the moment you cannot borrow books by yourself as the new machines haven’t been installed yet but there is staff that will help you during our opening hours (weekdays 10:0015:00).

We are still waiting for some furniture to be delivered, especially some of the bookshelves. Before they are delivered we cannot offer the rest of our books for loan. Also the whole library cannot fully open until all renovation and installation work has been carried out. And of course some services are not offered in the physical library at the moment because of the situation with COVID-19.

On the entrance floor there are a few new study places that we see that you have started using. Just think about keeping distance and not working together in large groups! We also want you to only visit the library if you have to.

Thank you for your understanding! Next semester we hope to be able to open larger parts of the new library and also offer extended opening hours.

In the creation of a new library in Solna there has of course been architects and other parties involved doing the big work with input from us at the library. The building architects are Respons arkitekter and the interior design has been done by LINK arkitektur. Also the KI facilities planners and our landlord Akademiska hus have of course been important parties in this project.

In designing the new library we have been focusing on the experiences of the staff but also asked student representatives involved in the project.

The main focus of the renovation of the public spaces in the library has been the following:

  • The public space is part of KI:s informal learning spaces and should have an open floor plan that feels safe for the users
  • We should have a good working environment for our students, staff, researchers and the public. The type of furniture, ergonomics, ventilation, sound and light are all important
  • The space should be clearly divided into zones with different sound levels to promote both cooperative meetings and individual, silent study. It should be clear what type of behavior is expected in different zones
  • We build for the use of personal technology - lots of sockets are needed

Below you can see some examples of how the public spaces will be designed and furnished. We start on the entrance level where the focus is on study spaces and the area Torget for public events and lectures.

If we take the stairs to the next level we will find our support area, books and study spaces.

Further in on this level we find more study spaces, our classrooms and group study rooms.

The project managers of the renovation have now had the chance to peek into the new library.

Image of a mirror facade of the new library.

Behind a mirror facade the new library in Solna is taking shape. We, the project managers, Emma-Lotta and David, went in to have a look.

In the development of the public areas student representatives have been involved. From the feedback we got we have tried creating a variety of different types of study places. For example, more places for individual studies were requested.

The popular group rooms have also gotten a touch up and new colours, here one in purple.

Light, open spaces in the new library

There has also been a lot of focus on getting better light and ventilation and creating more open spaces in the library. This area will be partly filled with bookshelves and study places.

Image of a purple mat where the staff will be available.

Here on this beet-coloured mat the library staff will be present, ready to help you. You will be able to consult both library staff and Student IT staff, and have the option of being seated for longer consultations in an area screened off with curtains.

We look forward to moving in and welcoming you all to our new premises. But there is still some stuff to take care of. Join us on our journey towards a new library here on the blog, news will be posted continuously.
